To allow oil or natural gas to flow that would otherwise be trapped in geological formations; the wells must be hydraulically fractured. Fracturing fluid is pumped downhole to create a targeted network of paper-thin fractures within the shale. The fluid is typically 99.9% water and sand, with a mix of 3-4 highly diluted additives, many of which are biodegradable. This phase typically takes 2-3 days per well. Once completed, the equipment leaves.
